quilting needs!

Longarm Quilting Tip Sheet
Your Quilt Top:
- Seams pressed either to the
side or open. No excessive
fabric in seams. - No embellishments (buttons,
bells, sequins, or ribbons) You
can add those later. - Mark the top of your quilt with
a tag. - Trim any dark threads that will
show through light-colored
fabrics. - Stay-stitching is nice, but not
requiredโฆ UNLESS you have a
piano-key border.
Your Thread Choice:
- Glide Thread runs best in our
Bernina Q24 longarm. - Best practice is to use the same
color thread on both top &
bottom to prevent โpokiesโ - Thread color is your choice
unless you would like our
professional opinion.
Your Backing:
- Backing needs to be 3โ to 4โ
larger on all sides than the quilt
top. This is to ensure that the
side clamps can hold onto the
backing fabric - ALWAYS leave the selvages on
the outside edges of the
backing. You should not leave
selvages on an inside seam - Pieced backingsโHorizonal
seams are preferred, instead of
vertical seams. If using vertical
seams, do not choose a
directional quilt design. - Centering another quilt on the
back of your quilt top is VERY
tricky, BUT do-able. - ยท Wide backings (108โ or larger)
are less fussy than pieced
backings.
Other Services:
- Trimming/Squaring
- Binding Services
Batting Options:
- Hobbโs 80/20 is used in the
shop. - Customer batting is always
accepted. - If using a pieced batting, please
make sure that all pieces are the
same type of batting. - Do NOT pin baste top, batting
and backing together. We layer
each section separately on the
longarm. Removing pins just
takes unnecessary time.
ย
Your Quilt Design:
- Good theme choices are:
hobbies, floral designs, or
geometrics. - Quilting options include E2E
(Edge to Edge), Borders and
Corners, Block or motif
placement, Ruler work, or
complete Custom Design.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is the price calculated?
Quilting is per square inch of your quilt (W ร H) at the rate for the style you choose, plus a $0.0015/sq-in handling fee. Batting is calculated on (W+10) ร (H+10) โ that 5-inch margin lets us load your quilt onto the frame. Special borders use the formula: # borders ร (Area / 3.14) ร $0.022. Binding is per perimeter inch (2 ร (W+H)) at $0.10/in for one side or $0.20/in for both. Every order has a $75 minimum.
How long does mail-in quilting take?
Standard turnaround is currently 4โ6 weeks from the day your quilt arrives. Add Rush ($60) to bump your project to the front of the queue (1โ2 weeks). More on turnaround tiers →
What batting should I pick?
Hobbs 80/20 is the workhorse โ soft drape, holds quilting well, $0.0035/sq-in. Bamboo blend gives a buttery hand for wedding/heirloom quilts. 100% Wool resists wrinkles and is perfect for show quilts. If you provide your own batting, we charge $0 for the batting line. Compare all batting options →
Do I need to prep anything before shipping?
Press your quilt top and backing flat. Trim loose threads. Make sure the backing is at least 8 inches longer and wider than your quilt top. See full prep checklist → We can also do trimming & squaring ($5) and binding preparation ($25) on this end.
Can I see examples of your work?
Yes โ browse 429 finished customer projects in our portfolio, or pick a specific pantograph design to see all the quilts that have used it.
Is the price on the calculator the final price?
It's an exact estimate using the same formula Carol & Leo use to price every job. Final pricing may vary slightly only if the actual quilt size differs from what was entered or if you add services after submitting. They'll confirm by email within one business day.
What if my quilt is damaged in transit?
Always insure your shipment for replacement value โ both ways. Carriers cover lost/damaged packages within their declared insurance limits. Read our damage policy →
